Discovering Linux in Nepal… A Joyride
Posted by iron4ever on August 21, 2008
Hmmm… What can I say? I’m totally dumbfounded by my discoveries throughout the day.
I was looking for some good computer technology related forum/website/blog based in Nepal; or created by a Nepalese. And I must say in the FOSS department; I’m impressed. I never knew about The FOSS Nepal Community. I came to know about FOSS Nepal winning the Software Freedom Day 2007 Best Event Competition. If you ask me; I never expected something at this scale to be present in Nepal; however small it maybe, it all counts. I came to know about the Software Freedom Day observed around mid-September, each year by our FOSS community and the programs held. Even I could be a part of it if I prepare something presentable. I had a good lotta time in their IRC channel.
The ubuntu forum was the second place I visited today. I got the link from on of the guys in the FOSS Community IRC. He also gave me the IRC of this ubuntu forum. Though the user base is a paltry 24 in the forum; I really liked it. I was thinking; such great things simply aren’t to be in Nepal, but here it was, before my eyes. Trust me, regularly visiting the DIGIT Forum and reading stuff there, made me a bit of sick becasue that was in some other country. I wanted something indigenous and I got it, though in it’s preliminary stage.
And yes; the google group *nixdharan. I found out about this group based in Dharan whose members are Linux users and help propagate FOSS to the people around. The group was made sometime in 2003 or later. It all started off with Mr. Tushar Neupane organizing a small meeting of Linux users in Municipality building. that’s what I’ve gathered from what I read.
Anyways, the day sees me off as a happy lad..
